My boat has a 1979 Mercury 115 outboard with thunderbolt ignition. Over a month ago I got it on the lake and after shutting engine off it wouldn't restart. I cranked for about 10-15 sec. it would ignite but die immediately. Took the boat to the shop. They said it was stator and proceed to order and replace. 3 weeks later I hadn't heard from shop so called. They advised me that after stator was replaced boat was "still not running quite right" and that they'd get back to me. 5 weeks later I went to shop to see what was going on. They advised me that when the stator went it must've taken out the distributor also. They were having problems loacting a 79 distributor. I know little about OBs. Am I being BSed? Is it possible for the stator to wipe out the distributor too or is it possible that the distributor was really the problem all along? Are 79 Merc distributors really that few and far between? Any suggestions, tips, or advice are greatly appreciated as I am between a rock and a hard place with this boat shop. Thanks in advance. Dan Smith smith3132@insightbb.com

Re: 1979 Mercury 115 Thunderbolt Stator/Distributor

welcome aboard,
I'll try to answer a few questions for you here.
as far as I know, a faulty stator won't drag down
a dist. with it.
normally the trigger (part of dist) go's out...
is a normal replacement part and can be easily
ordered from mercury. (not cheap)
maybe he's tryin 2 find a used one for you?
next time come here first for guidence :D
good luck,
M.Y.
