I was curious if anybody with one of these mercury "tower of power" has this spring behind there motor? Mine is power tilt. I bought a new spring but in the parts description it says "24-94891-spring swivel bracket not used with power trim." The two rubber spacers on the shaft also say "not used with full power trim" I'm wondering if someone put the spring on there and its not supposed to be and that's why it broke?

Also, there is oil weeping out of a tiny hole on the front of the lower unit. is this normal?
Also, are these two hoses supposed to be connected or just vents? Thanks!!

The spring and spacers are leftover parts from a TnT conversion. They are reverse lock parts not used or needed with TnT.

The hose is for a speedo pickup. Got a non-working speedo in the boat?

I think the hole on the leading edge of the lower unit is a weep hole for draining or the speedo pickup. When you put the boat on the trailer does water flow out of the hole and a few others?

Thanks! i knew something seemed weird about the spring. It was confusing because the serial number on motor shows its a power tilt so i didn't think it was converted. The serial number must be part of the converted piece then... makes me wonder what year my motor really is...

There is lower unit oil coming out of the hole... there is an aftermarket speedometer pick up installed on the boat.

Heres a picture of the motor if anyone has any year ranges or knows where to find a different serial number.

Have you changed lube and pressure tested the lower unit? A seal may be bad allowing lube out. And water in.

The serial number range for your motor will be for both TnT and non-TnT. That's why the parts diagrams say not used for a TnT motor. It can get confusing. The model type shows the options. Your model number can be found from the serial number if anyone has access to an old Merc database. Fun Times can sometimes find that.

From Max Rules;

79merc.png

E = Electric start
L = Long shaft, 20"
XL = Extra long shaft, 25"
PT = Power trim

So three model numbers for the same serial number range - 5168574 to 5600986. The last column is the starting SN for Canadian motors.

The Cowl is a 79

That little hole on the leading edge of the gear case, is the Speedo Pitot Tube. It shouldn't have any oil in it, or draining out of it.
