I have been reading and following along on a lot of these boat repair and restorations for awhile now and decided it was time to try one myself, here is what I am working on and need some help with.
I have a 1979 Sea Ray SRV-240 Hard Top that needs transom repair, this is something that I am aware of and can handle and in the process of completing but I am concerned about possible stringer damage as well.
Been told how to check them but have also been told that with the molded in inner liner (floor) that it may not have stringers. Any ways I have cut a few test holes in the areas that I was told should contain the stringers, all I find is solid foam in those areas. I did cut the top off one of the engine mount box's for further inspection and I did find a plywood pad molded in to the top of the fiberglass glass engine mount box's, that lag bolts go into to attach the engine mounts to and I found a larger piece of wood support attached (bonded) to the plywood and molded into the upper portion of the liner extending rearward about 15 inches or so but not attached to the hull or transom anywhere. I have removed several areas of foam looking for stringers and I did find the adhesive strips where it looks like they glued the inner liner to the hull but so far no stringers.
I was told that on some Sea Ray's, they molded the inner liner and then filled it with foam for structural support and floatation and then attached the inner liner to the hull and they did not use traditional stringers in the sense that we would normally expect to find them. Anybody know for sure? I don't want to keep cutting/drilling holes looking for wood stringers if they are not there but I also don't want to skip it and not check them out if someone knows for sure if they are there or not.
This should turn out to be a pretty nice boat when completed so I don't want to skip something now and have to come back and do it again later. This will probably be the first of many questions as I work on this project.
One last question today, when I attach the new transom wood to the outer transom skin should I coat the wood with resin and hardner and some filler and clamp it or should I also put a piece of filber glass cloth between the wood and the outer skin, I have seen examples of both and would like to know the best way.
Any input is appreciated.
