I have a 1979 Sunnerrunner with a Penta 200d which I believe is a 305, it is also has a Volvo 280 outdrive. It sat for about 1 1/2 year, i got it running with fresh gas, seafoam, and starter fluid. Would take a little starter fluid to get it going and then after that crank everytime, even after running it a bit yesterday (had trim tab problems) it cold started on first turn this morning. After pulling my mother in-law and son for approx 5 minutes my wife pulled me for about 10 and then it slowly lost power. I got in boat and confirmed the loss of power and we limped back to the dock with a max rev of about 2500 rpms. It revs fine in neutral but in drive it does not. This boat is new to me and I am new to boats. So not sure where to start. Thanks.

the fact that you need to give it starting fluid to start is indicative that the carb needs to come apart and be rebuilt. I am willing to bet that you will find the carp full of gunk. time to pull the carb and rebuild it.

did you change the fuel/water filter as well?

i was thinking that the carb needed to come off and be rebuilt, ive never actually rebuilt one but am not afraid to try it. I did not change the fuel/water filter, im not quite sure where that is? any suggestions on possible location. I assume if i follow the main fuel line to the motor i will come across it.

fuel/water separator should be on starboard side of motor, probably hanging off bottom of exhaust manifold. change the filter, when you do, empty the contents into a clear plastic bag and inspect the contents.

the filter should be changed every year.
