I have a 1980 EBKO with a 140 I/O. I just changed it from points to electronic ignition. It no longer idles unless you give it a little throttle. I was wondering do I have to have it timed or what? It was running fine with the points, I just got tired of changing the points every year.

Yes you have to have it timed, you also need to readjust the carb mixture and reset the idle speed..

Is this something I can do myself, or do I need to leave it to the professionals?

Come on, none of us know if you have the knowledge or ability to set the timeing, you have to ask your self that.
Do you have a timing light and know how to use it? Do you know what 6° BTDC at 650 to 700 rpm means, Do you understand checking the advance timing? How about adjusting the idle mixture, and rpm?

Yes I have a timing light, and yes I know how to use it. I do know what BTDC(before top dead center of the #1 cylinder is, at 650 to 700 revs. per min. means. yes, yes and yes, I was just wondering should I leave to the pros. or not, a simple yes or no will do.

As Don stated,..........That's an Unanswerable Question.............

IF you Know what you're Doing,......... Go For It........

IF you have Doubts,.......... Call a Tech.........
It's My Guess ,........
That IF you Thought you could just drop in that module,+ Go Boating, without Any Tuning, or other Set-Up,+ Adjustments,.................

You Probably otta Call a Tech............

Being a "tech",and not knowing what electronic ignition he installed, where should I set his timing when he comes to me ?Sounds like the "dwell" changed quite a bit if it no longer will idle as before.

DHP
