First off, this is my first time posting. I just picked up a 1980 VIP w/a 1980 175hp Mercury Black Max. My problem is occuring when shifting...when shifted from neutral, there is a "grinding" into gear, then followed by some hesitation (not in RPM), then it runs fine after that. A friend of mine had a similar problem a few years ago, and I remember him saying that he needed to adjust the shifter. Is this the problem?? If so, how do I do it?? Thanks for any inputs...I'm sure I'll be posting a few questions here and there to get all the bugs worked out of my new boat!!

IF you are shifting slowly you will get grinding.

Move the shifter with a quick sharp push. If it still does it, then there is a problem somewhere.

TMD

The hesitation occurs after it is placed in gear. The grinding isn't really what I'm that worried about, it's the hesitation I'm worried about...like it's kicking out of gear. Anyway, I looked at my manual last night and it suggests the cable adjustment and gives me a few steps to do this. I'll scheck it out this weekend. Thanks for the reply Marine Doctor!!
