its a BEAR to get it started! where should i start? carb rebuild or just the idle screw? once running, runs great. starts good once warmed up. ran it with the quicksilver power tuner and now it runs smoother.

what is your cold start procedure? that motor has a choke enrichter. You pull and push the choke knob a 2 or 3 times to start.
If you remove the hood/cover you will see how it works.

Re: 1980 20hp- hard starting!

my usual procdure that i have been doing is as follows. connect and prime fuel line, pull with choke open 2-3 times then pull the choke out -in the closed position. but i have noticed that when the choke is closed, its not really closed all the way. like i have to manually hold it to keep a full choke. correct me if im wrong with this procedure, its bear to start.

Got a serial number.? A couple of pics of the carb might help also. sounds like your motor does not have the enricher style of choke. Is there a little plunger on the side of the carb that that gets compressed when you pull out the choke knob?

1980 20hp serial number 5608769. the choke in the front of the cowling connects to the choke shutter on the front of the carb. from what i can tell this carb is very similiar to the ones used on 200 (20hp) mercury in the 1970's. there is not any plunger that i can see. if i spray carb cleaner directly into the carb it starts easiler, maybe 2-3 pulls. ill try to post a picture if you still would like one.

compression is 95 and 100psi. second time i checked both were 100psi. just an obvious question. of the two plug wires, does the coil and plug wire on the cdi box/starter side of the block go to the top cylinder? the exhaust cover side with coil and plug wire to bottom cylinder? not that i think i switched them but either one could reach the other spark plug with no problem. i have champion L78v plugs.
