Working on a 80/25hp
The driveshaft is locked in the splines on the end of the crank.
Any way to remove?

I've hooked vice grips on the shaft and tried to hammer it down.
Doesn't move at all.

Usually I can get it to come out, NOT!!!

Suggestions?

Did you get the lower off? Sometimes you can remove the lower by having the impellar key go through the housing

Been there. Might start with a mix of ATF and acetone. Turn the motor over on its top, and run the stuff down the shaft. Let it set, and then go back to the vise grips if you have some room to work with. (I don't have a slide hammer -- probably would be better.)

But I've used a bunch of household stuff on salt corrosion, including cider vinegar and cola -- whatever ends up working. Let it set overnight. A little Draino or toilet bowl cleaner can do it too. Nasty stuff, though.

I had the same problem recently on a 82 9.9hp that was a salt motor. I left it upside down and liberally sprayed PB Blaster down the driveshaft every chance I got for a couple of weeks. I bought the largest and heaviest pair of vice grips Lowes had and that finally did the trick. Even then it still left some big gouges I had to smooth out.

Also, someone posted this recently in a separate forum which is pretty interesting....

"FWIW the best penetrating oil one can use is a DIY homemade mix of 50% acetone and 50% automatic transmission fluid (ATF).

Recently ?Machinist Workshop Magazine? did a test on penetrating oils. Using nuts and bolts that they ?scientifically rusted? to a uniform degree by soaking in salt water, they then tested the break-out torque required to loosen the nuts. They treated the nuts with a variety of penetrants and measured the torque required to loosen them.

This is what they came up with:
  • Nothing: 516 lbs
  • WD-40: 238 lbs
  • PB Blaster: 214 lbs
  • Liquid Wrench: 127 lbs
  • Kano Kroil: 106 lbs
  • ATF/Acetone mix (50/50 mix): 50 lbs"

Yes the lower is off.
I put 2 pairs of grips on there and hammered them.
Will talk to the owner?? and see how he wants to proceed?
It's a 250$ and he's already got 160 in parts.
A new shaft is $250.
????????????

Thanks for the tip on the Acetone and ATF!!

It all depends on how badly rusted in it is. If the magic elixers don't work you probably will wind up pulling the powerhead and devising some way to use a heavy slide hammer to beat it out. Worst case scenario, you may never get it out.

Shaft ain't necessarily toast, though. If you have a rubber gasket wrap it before attaching the vise grips -- not so much for the sake of the shaft, but to get a good hold.

Now that he is holding off on fixing it flip it over and put acetone and ATF in it and let it sit. Time will be your friend and the shaft can be saved from the gouges a file and emory cloth work wonders.
