1980 35 HP prop shaft installation

I have an E35ELCSM I am replacing the lower end seals in. I need some advice on installing the prop shaft. I do not have the "special tool" to hold the spring and two balls. Is there a substitute or a trick? It looks like the tool indexes in the dog to put the balls in the correct location and holds the balls recessed until ready to push in? It also says you can be 180 degrees out. Can somebody help please.

Yes, You can hold one ball half way on one side and the other with a large flat screw driver then press the shaft IN. That is what I did on My 84 evinrude, it takes a little finesse but not too hard.
