hi i took the lower unit apart and trying to get the shift rod out unhooked from the cotter key inside the lower end i straightened the cotton pin basiclly with long needle nose plyers but i cant pull it out i tried using a hook scriber and to pull it up through the loop at end all it did was ruin my scriber

is there a trick or a stronger tool to use?

I just needed to look at the first picture !!!------This lower unit is garbage!----Look for a good used lower unit.-----Lots of them around in southern Ontario.----With new parts the repairs to this unit will far surpass the value of the motor.

Next step is to evaluate the powerhead...--No point in spending time / $$$ on a lower unit if the powerhead has been subject to the same level of maintenance!!--Your location is ?

might not even be worth to rebuild it either

A " running " engine means very little to me.---Condition is all important.---The condition of the lower unit indicates to me that the engine never had proper care !

ah ok well i cant tell what condition power head is just from pics i just took i guessing maybe the heads shouldnt be brown i cant tell i not sure if it was brown years ago or also gray im guessing gray ... and i think it over heated..

so i not 100% sure but ill do compression test tommorow to see if it even has compression but cant tell if head gasket blown... always something i tell ya

well i just reinspected it closer... so orginal color was gray and the heads are brown so water pump failure and i turned over by hand so it does spin feels like compression no wires melted just the heads are brown... least thats all i can tell with out a battery to turn over.... and cant tell if it was running to lean?? to have caused it over heat? or would that just be water pump

so I got the engine running... here is video
https://youtu.be/A80yWRtJAOk

the gas tank had no fuel in it was water with the smell of gas in there.. and white pieces in there and the o ring and the float for the fuel cap in there guessing the metal bar is in there too... in those portable fuel tanks.... so these people didn't care at all... they basically drove it into the ground

the compression on both cylinders is like 133 psi maybe 135psi

you mentioned there are places that would have this lower end in southern eastern Ontario.... Im close to Belleville or Peterborough Ontario in small town of Hastings Ontario.

the 3 places I contacted so far don't have anything that old... maybe if you know of a place you can direct me to be great..

I appreciate the info you have provided so far

You've got all winter to find something. I would guess that any of the 1980s era through hub 20-35hp lowers with the access window for the shift rod in the water intake would fit, but I do know there were subtle changes from year to year. Yours had the two lug clutch dog, while later ones had three lugs. Should swap as a unit, but individual bits are different.

Make sure you get one the proper shaft length, as they came in short and long shaft flavors.

Try an ad on Kijiji or Craigslist for a parts motor. Might get a whole motor for cheap!

If power head checks out and you keep this you will have to find a lower unit from a 1980 - 1983. In the 1980 model they changed a lot, biggest being the water intake and water pump. 1979 and older will not fit. Then in 1984 they changed again and the 1984 and newer will not fit.

I know this because I had a 1981 with a blown lower and I searched for almost 3 years to find a nice used one. Eventually I sold the power head to someone for parts.
