1980 35hp upper water pump housing removal

hi i working on the lower end something is broken in the bottom half of gear box it doesnt shift so i took it off but i also wanna remove the water pump cover but it cant as the arm still attached... do you need to pull the top engine off to get at that linkage as i cant see how you can get it from the side

Do you have any kind of manual ??-----------Have you removed the black plastic water intake screens to disconnect the shift rod ??-------------Ask more questions if you have to.--------There is no hammer required for this kind of work.

hi no manual,, and as i stated i already took the lower half already off... the gear housing sitting on the work bench.

and i just bought this boat saturday so impossible to even know of getting a manual i didnt know what engine was on it.. i only bought it for the trailer but decided i going to fix engine and sell it...

but i can not get the shift rod down since its all the way up there and from looks of it you gotta pull the power head off to unhook the linkage up inside the

????-------I am not sure of what you are trying to do !-------If the complete lower unit is off the pump housing comes off with 6 screws.-------Why do you need to remove the upper shift rod ??

2nd pic was blurry

yes i took the 6 bolts off but when you buy a rebuild kit you get a new water pump housing... well you can not remove the water pump top housing since that shift rod bolt is in the way... so you need to remove the shift rod to slide the upper water pump housing up and off the shift rod as you cant slide it down due to the flared end with the nut on the end.. so it must slide up off the shift rod from the top

here some pics i havent tried to unscrew it if it can screw the fitting off the bottom and it all slides down ill go that route

STOP--------Put one of the bolts back into this assembly.-----Now scrape the paint off the upper shift rod.-------Then slide the nut up and remove the split / black plastic keeper.-----Now remove the entire lower unit .---The rest is simple !!
