Hello,I need help with this motor I just got.Couple of questions. What is the proper spark advance at idle and WOT?The carb air intake cover says 21 deg, thats at WOT?If so what is it at idle?I have a strobe light and figured out how to adjust the advance by moving the arm under the wheel on top. Motor was idling fast so I took the carbs off for cleaning but theye are clean.Forgot witch way the float goes. The side with the "notch" goes up I belive. Cannot find any way to adjust carb.Is it a fixed carb with no adjustment? My old 69 55 hp had a needle on top to adjust mixture at idle speed. This is almost the same carb. Can I swap the carbs from the old one and adjust the idle like in the old one?I would rather fix this the right way.Any advice needed. Thanks Kris

Search the FAQs for "Joe Reeves timing" he has a very good method for setting timing.

Yes it is a fixxed jet carb so no adjustments and NO the other carbs won't work, what came with the motor is what you need to use on it.

If you don't have an OEM manual get one, you really don't want to be just messing with this and that on an outboard, you can get yourself into alot of trouble.

On an outboard the timing, throttle andshift are all sincronized, if you get one out of adjustment ithrows everything else off.

What problem were you having that you needed to pull the carbs?

Re: 1980 60 hp evinrude

Thanks guys, the motor was idling realy fast with the cables disconected and carb fully closed. One mechanic told me they must be clogged and runing lean.Thats why I took them down to clean but they are clean.I am not sure if those are original carbs. From reading here all night last night they should be adjustable. They have that screw in "jet " behind the hex screw on the bottom of carb, also they have the "jet" at top of the carb covered by a screw with a notch for flat screwdriver. They have the thin tube running throughta thicker pipe. the thin one is at an angle to the bigger one.Bouth carbs have the same numbers on top the #323832 and bottom#313356 02.Maybe thats going to help to check if thats the right carb for the motor . I adjusted my WOT advance to 21 deg like it says on the air intake cover using strobe light on running motor. That makes my idle advance at 8 deg. When i got the motor the idle advance was 4 deg past the top point. That could not have been wright? If I adjust the idle spped advance to about zero it idles ok.Can this be the right setting for it?Where can I find more info on the link and sinc ?Thanks guys .Sorry I am not too good on the technical language but I think youunderstand what I am trying to say.

Hi Junky and Welcome to iboats.

Your best source for information is an OEM manual. They are sold at boat shops, ebay, and I think you can even get one here on iboats. The two threads that Tashasdaddy posted above will probly help out a bunch too.

Welcome to I-Boat junky. The link & sync procedure takes care of the timing issue. Setting WOT throttle timing is the most important to keep from burning pistons in your engine. Closed throttle timing is taken care of with the idle stop setting, it is of much less importance. Remember, idle speed must be set with the prop in the water in forward gear 700-750 rpm.

Re: 1980 60 hp evinrude

So I should be moving the timing adjustment arm until I find the right rpm?Even if it means I will be getting the spark after the top point on piston? In this position the motor is very hard to start when cold.I have to crank it for a few minutes while playing with the throtle. After it starts the top cylinder"puffs' into carburator. But once it gets hot it starts on the first crunck. If I stop long enough for the motor to cool off the problem comes back. Are my carbs really not adjustable? What are those things screwed in behind the screw on the bottom and top?Going back to why I took the carbs off,the same mechanic told me to cover the air intake.According to him this should choke the motor but the motor was runing the same.So he concluded that the carbs where puling in air from smwhere and needed to be checked and resealed. Was he wright about it or should I "kick him with his good advice to the curb"? Will put the carbs back on tommorow ,check compression and try adjusting idle speed. Is adjusting the idle with the motor in gear with prop on in a drum full of water ok?Do I have to be out on the big water? Thanks for all the help.Kris
