I just acquired a 70 hp Evinrude I think it is a 1980 Model # E7OELCSA, This motor is sputtering and backfiring, I cleaned the carbs and still does it, Was checking fire on plugs top 2 fired good 3rd shocked me through pliers, rubber, everything just by holding the wire with the pliers Will a coil fire hot and then not hot cause I held the other 2 by hand and they didnt shock me through the wire like that one. It has 1 coil that has been replaced it is the top one and it fires good but I looked up part number on it and it says it doesnt match with this motor the part number is 582508, the older 2 dont have a part number on them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

well you have one bad wire. if it fires once or twice swap the coils see if it moves cyclenders. check all wiring (grounds) bad contact is commond for that plug, if not could be power pack.

Re: 1980 70hp evinrude need help

I switched coil with the center coil because bottom plug kept getting soaked and it is still flooding bottom cylinder. Does anyone know how to adjust the carbs on this evinrude it has 3 cylinders and 3 carbs. or any ideas on what the problem might be please and thanks

Carb jests are fixed, no adjustment. Check coils. Backfiring sounds like
plug wires are crossed. Older coils had no numbers on them. Install new plug wires, have coils and power pack checked at good repair shop. The coils put out 20000 Volts, you'll certainly get shocked if you connect to them!
