I've got a 1980 Johnson Stinger that was purchased on a 1977 Arrow Glass Bass boat....when I bought it I tested the compression top to bottom @ 118, 115 and 118, saw there was plenty of spark on all three plugs so I made the decision to buy...knew the boat needed the floor replaced so my son and I undertook this task. Finished the floor, put it in the water and it ran PERFECT......jumped on plane and flew across the water....acording to the speedo 35 mph @ 5200 rpms. We could not have been happier, decided to fish and gave that up shortly. Started it up no problem, gave it the gas and it bogged down and would not go....had to idle all the way back to the ramp. What the heck could the problem be? It had been sitting awhile, but I figured that if there was a problem it would have been evident from the outset??? Any ideas??

Make sure timer base is moving with throttle advance and test spark for each cylinder.

It's under the stator, which is under the flywheel. It has linkage to the throttle and should be free to rotate as throttle is advanced. Look at the parts list on the BRP Evinrude site.

Checked the timer base, was moving very easily.....ran on muffs @ around 18-1900 rpms and checked firing to all plugs....dropped rpms when i removed the wire from each plug...so I know they r firing. I noticed a lil hesitation when I juiced it with fast idle lever....I know theres a difference especially when it has a load on it hesitating. The thing that gets me is it was running PERFECTLY in the beginning and now runs like a lame dog! Possibly gotten some trash in the high speed jet(s)?? And need to clean rebuild the carbs?? Any other ideas?
I've just ordered a shop manual (it was a '79 model) shouldn't be any difference should there?

BTW, the flywheel shouldn't get that hot. May be overheating. Check the cylinder heads ... should be able to touch them for a few seconds w/o undue discomfort. Motor should run ~ 140 to 150 ?F.

I had replaced the water pump kit and it seems to be cooling good...i can touch the head no problem. Like I asked before, could it have sucked some trash into the high speed jet(s) and is causing the hesitation now? The tank was clean and new fuel/oil mixture was added before we tried it out last week..........I will admit, that I'm an idiot and don't have any type inline filter or (fuel/ water seperator) installed (will recify that today)!!

Re: 1980 75hp Stinger (update and more ???'s)

I added an inline filter, removed the carbs and found a screw laying on the bottom cylinder reed plate....it wasn't keeping the plate open....it was just laying there....came from the cover?? I then replaced the carbs......and ran her for a lil while on muffs...temps good. I then ran it on fast idle at 2700 rpm and proceeded to check spark, found #2 (middle) cylinder wasn't firing, now, how do I determine if I need a power pack, coil or stator??

You can see if it's a coil by swapping the "bad" cylinder with one of the "good" ones. Involves pulling a wire out of the plug where the coils plug into the pack...
