1980 80hp dies when put in gear

HI, my brother has a 1980 80hp mariner, it idles good and when go to put in
gear it will die every time unless you mess with the fast idle lever and then
work then both together to get it going. It is also now starting to not take
off unless you give some choke at times.

Your idle mixture is lean if it won't adjust out then clean the carbs
