Hello everyone,

As the subject line states, I have a 25HP Mercury 2-stroke outboard from 1980/81. When I look up the serial number, that's how it is listed. It is a fully remote controlled motor with electric start. No tiller arm. Recently I had a problem with it where it quit going in gear. When I looked at it, I discovered that the pin that connects the horizontal shift shaft to the vertical rod that runs down to the lower unit had gotten bent and the vertical rod was disconnected from the horizontal shaft. I also noticed that one of the arms in the "fork" that the pin attaches to the vertical rod seems lose. So the pin doesn't have any support in that end when the linkage moves. I hope this all makes sense. In looking at pictures it looks like both of those fork arms should be welded to the shaft. So now I am looking to get a replacement shaft as I don't know anyone with a welder. I noticed in the parts list for this motor that there are two different shafts, a 95027A 1 and a 95027A 6. Both shafts look the same from what I can tell so I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference is? Could I use either one in my motor? The list price for them are quite different...

I purchased this motor a while back and am now using it on my newly built 13' boat. I suspect that one of the previous owners treated it a bit rough for that pin to get bent like that. It seems quite strong.

Does anyone know if these two shafts are interchangeable?

Thanks in advance for any pointers and advice. And I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere.

The a6 is probably the latest part #. Mercury likes to supersede part #s

Thanks for your response. I was suspecting this as well although the parts list I have been looking at didn't show the A1 part as obsolete. I found an A6 part and have ordered it. Thankfully it cost a lot less than $90 like the parts list suggested. I'll see when I get it.
