I've got a 1980 model 92H0G chrysler 9.9 with no spark. I finally got the flywheel off after a lot of tapping with a brass hammer and prying with a pry bar. The coils and condensers all check out within the required tolerences. Everything looks clean except for some rust on the flywheel magnets. I cleaned that off and would like to put it back together and check the spark. Is there anything else I should be looking for before I put the flywheel back on?? It's pretty tough to get the flywheel off so I thought I would check to see if anyone had some ideas on other potential problems before I put it back together. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the two black or brown wires that look like lamp cord. They are the stop circuit and function to short the points together. If they are frayed or if the stop switch is shorted (if the engine has one), then no spark will occur. Also check to be certain there is a ground wire from the underside of the magneto carrier plate to the block. It usually connects to the top screw on the fuel pump.

There should be three wires connected to each of the points terminals: The condenser, the stop wire, and the magneto coil primary wire.

I previously disconnected the 2 brown wires from the stop switch and that still gave me no spark. I also found the ground wire you mentioned and tested it. It has a good connection. Could the rust on the flywheel have caused the no spark condition?? The motor had been setting for 3 or 4 years without use. The guy I got it from used it as a backup on his bigger boat. I tried to send a picture but it exceeded the space limit. Thanks for your help!!!

Getting ready to put flywheel back on. All the wires, coils, and condensers look and test good. Cleaned the points with a points file. Would the rust on the flywheel magnets cause a no spark condition?? I would think you would at least get a weak one. Any comments in the next few hours would be appreciated.

Rust should not cause a problem but there is a tight clearance between the magneto cores and the flywheel magnets. It is only supposed to be about a thick piece of paper. A gap a matchbook cover thickness would be too much clearance.
