what range of motor hp and years will fit a 1980 9.9hp evinrude E10RCSE? the gears in the lower unit shattered when it hit a rock. case still looks good though. i checked the top secret files, but it only shows 40hp+

i have a 9R-71R i could use for parts, but the case is different in size and design.
any help would be great
Thanks

Re: 1980 9.9 lower unit?

Your generation of 9.9 was introduced by Johnson / Evinrude as a 1974 model and ran through 1992. They were offered as a 9.9 or 15 during those years. As far as I know, the lower unit is the same for all those years. They share the same 12:29 gear ratio in the gearcase. Now I am not 100% certain that all years are 100% interchangeable because the exhaust tube (expansion chamber) was altered over the course of the run to help make the 15 actually come to close to producing 15 horses. The changes were later incorporated on the 9.9. I don't know 100% if the drive shaft splines are identical or not but I suspect they are. If I were you I would concentrate on any 1974-1992 9.9/15 motors, paying attention to the shaft length (15" vs. 20" or even the extra-long Sailmaster motors).

For all intents & purposes your old 1971 9? has nothing really that can be shared (maybe a transom clamp handle...)
