Re: 1980 Charger 85 hp Gaskets
I have only seen them as an assembly with the bearing itself and have not had occasion to remove the seal. I would not, however, be surprised if it were a standard seal. If you do order a seal, be certain to specify all stainless--that is stainless shell and stainless garter spring. I have ordered some seals and been assured that seals are only made in stainless. A year later, the garter was rusted as was part of the shell--guess the guy won't get any more of my business.
You did however mention collar and spring--usually there is a slight land on the driveshaft just below the splines. a steel collar sits on this land and a rubber bellows seats into the collar, bevel side up. It presses against the crankshaft when the lower unit is attached to the leg. This helps to seal out moisture from the splines and prevent the hardened steel crankshaft from rusting and cold welding the shaft in it. The seal shell and spring are big enough to pass over the crankshaft/driveshaft seal so yes, it would lay on top of the water pump. A bad crankshaft seal will allow some crankcase pressure to blow by and this would thereby reduce efficiency on that bottom cylinder.
