Hi guys, this is my first post. I retired a year ago and had a dream to float down the Missouri river from Kansas City. Wanted to buy a boat so cheap that I could float and then leave the boat or give it to somebody. I am now on boat # 8, first I/O and perhaps biggest challenge.
History: bought boat, sitting un covered for several years, water from the air intake hoses had run into the valve covers and oil pan was full of water. Pumped it out. Water first and then oil, didn't look too bad. Filled with Mo bil synthetic, on sale cheapest at Oriely. No key so replaced ignition switch (could have skipped this step if I was a little smarter, you learn as you go I guess). I bumped the starter and it turned over. big excitement. Put some sea foam in the gas tank, shot a little starter fluid in the carb and the thing started. Shut it off, hooked up the ear muffs, started and ran for 30 seconds. Water pouring out port engine block. Right under a twin solenoid bracket, turned out to be what I call a freeze plug. Got a new one, cleaned and installed, restarted, ran great then water from under starboard exhaust manifold. I am beginning to feel at this point what you are all telling me but I can't quit now. I do a temporary silicone patch so I can see if there are anymore freeze crack problems. Let it set for a few days for the silicone to set up. Try to start and it turns over and then quits. Do all the clean connections, charge battery etc. stuff and still nothing. Ripping out the floor while waiting on all this stuff. Try the starter again and just clicks. I am dumb so try pulling what I think is the solenoid off the top of the starter and then realize I am over my head so pull the starter(not easy the first time for an old weak man). I take the starter to the repair shop and they pull it apart to check it out and of course it is full of rust and a mess but say they can rebuild it. Reinstall the starter, hook it back up the way I think I took it apart (emphasis on I think), engage the ignition switch, the starter spins strongly, does not engage the flywheel and won't shut off, I panic, jump up and down and finally get the ground disconnected from the battery. I think maybe I hooked up wrong so switch the two wires to the solenoid and it just clicks. Switch back and have the runaway situation again. There are five wires going to the starter. Two 50 amp fused wires I am assuming go to the tilt and trim and the heavy wire from the battery, all of which I have connected to the large terminal on the starter. A red yellow wire, I think from the ignition switch and a dark wire slightly lighter gauge which I assume is a ground.
Help please!

Ayuh,... Ya might wanta just move on to #9...
You've got an electric shift Stringer drive I believe...
If it's a mechanical shift, it's only slightly better...

For the Starter,...
The Big heavy wires go on the Big terminal of the solenoid...
The small exciter wire that provides 12v, when the key is in the start position, goes on the Inside, tiny terminal...
The other small wires go on the outside tiny terminal...

Thanks, that is the way I have it hooked up but when it engages the starter just runs away and doesn't engage the ring gear. I have to disconnect the battery to stop the starter.

Turns out the starter shop put the wron drive unit in and it was throwing itself clear of the spooned so couldn't drive anything, fixed that and it turned right over and started. My temp fix on the exhaust manifold didn't hold up but didn't see any other leaks. Went into. Forward and reverse and the motor sounded good. A miracle.
