Hello, I have a 1980 Evinrude 15 hp. motor that I just got through putting a water pump kit in. I have great water flow & pressure at the "pee hole". But the ports on the back of the motor have very little if any water coming out of them. They have more coming out on decelleration but still very little. There is a hole on the shaft housing that has quite a bit of water coming out & I dont know if that's right or not. It confuses me that I have such good water flow & pressure at the "pee hole" & none coming out of the back ports. I took some pics & going to try to post them.

You have through hub exhaust on your engine, the majority of the cooling water goes out with the exhaust around the prop. The small stream coming out of the lower cowel is an indication of pump pressure. The two holes on the back of the exhaust housing may spit water at times but will never be a solid stream. A simple test for overheat is to see if you can hold your hand on the cylinder head for a count of three.

would that count of three also apply to a 3cyl 60hp Johnson ? when/ how do you decide when to replace a thermostat ?

Whenever you are paranoid and think it needs changing. Actually 90% of them are changed unnecessarily. When did you last change the one in your car?
