1980 Evinrude E5RLCS Throttle Question

While starting, the throttle is "stuck" unless I pull the flywheel around slowly to the correct spot before pulling the cable quickly and firing up the engine. If the engine starts while the throttle is in the "stuck" position it remains "stuck".

The previous owner said it was a feature but so far it's just caused extreme amounts of pain and anguish.

Does anyone know how to disable this "feature" or how to work it correctly so I don't have to pull the engine cover off before every startup?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 1980 Evinrude E5RLCS Throttle Question

Your motor is designed so that you can't over rev the motor in neutral, thus making the throttle control feel as if it's stuck. With the motor not running, remove the cowl, shift to neutral, and turn the throttle control. Watch what the mechanism is doing (or trying to do). There is also a lock out mechanism that prevents you from starting the motor in gear (forward or reverse).

Re: 1980 Evinrude E5RLCS Throttle Question

Thanks for the info. It appears this is not working as it should. Even further testing reveals that the throttle works perfectly if the lettering on the flywheel is turned to face forward or backward. If the motor is started with the lettering in any other direction then the throttle will not work correctly.

So in summary the flywheel position is effecting the throttle and not the shifting linkage.

Any ideas on why this is?

Something is either broken or not installed properly. Flywheel position should have no effect on the throttle control or the shift control.
