I've got a 1980 25hp evinrude tiller handle motor that's been through some hard times. I posted on here a few years ago about one night when i was out frogging and the motor blew up (long story). Anyways, got it back running for a while, but now it's giving me trouble again.

For about the last six months the only way I can get the motor started is to take the cowling off and spray starter fluid up in the carb. The motor will crank, then slowly sputter off and start to die so i have to keep spraying starter fluid in it every time it does that for about 5 minutes until it "warms" up and will run fine on it's own. Then after it's warm, I can just crank it right up after i turn it off. Unless it sits for a little while then I have to start the whole cycle over again.

Do yall think this is just a dirty carb? I mean it's seems like if the carb was dirty it wouldn't run so perfect after it warmed up.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

That's either a dirty carb or a bad fuel pump. Try pumping the bulb and see if that helps.

FWIW starter fluid will be a quick death to that motor. Use a spray bottle with premix instead.

Check the carb linkage adjustment to ensure that the butterfly is totally closed during cranking. If is i would recommend having the carb checked. It could be out of adjustment.

I always pump the bulb tight before i crank it and it seems to stay tight from then on.

I'm not sure what you mean by checking the linkage adjustment on the carb.

Guess I'll just have to bring it in to the shop at some point. The motor isn't worth very much money, and I don't have any money, so I always try and avoid the mechanic at all costs though.
