well i picked up this motor for $400 knowing that it was probably a runner...when i got it to the shop, i checked the compression and cold it was 125 on both cyl...spark looked excellent, but it wasn't getting any gas. so a new fuel pump and a new carb kit later...here i am with a perfect running motor. its very clean, gears work great...BUT...its a longshaft. here is some video. i usually don't run motors on the hose, but i shattered my test barrel today trying to get an ice chunk out of it :grumpy:

here she is in pics and video....

so now i have a 9.9 short shaft that is too small and an 35hp that is a longshaft. i really think i am going to sell this 35 horse if someone will give me a little money for it. its certainly worth more than the 475 i have invested in it!

Re: 1980 johnson 35 keep or sell???

so im seriously considering keeping this motor at this point. with the amount of money i have invested, this thing runs and starts like a top.

so i have a question...would this motor be safe on a mini-jacker jack plate? i found a brand new one locally for $45 and it would be MUCH cheaper than doing a full on short shaft conversion. the plate is rated for a 35 horse up to 150 lbs. from everything i've found this motor weighs around 120. i've talked to a few guys who have used the mini jack plates but they were all on 9.9 motors or 20's. im just curious about how much stress this would put on a transom? i would run a transom saver while trailering, but it seems like this might be the way to go...of all the motors i've tinkered with in the last year (have bought and repaired/tuned up about 10) this sucker is the strongest. my gut tells me to keep it.

I'd do it. Looks like a keeper.
