Hi folks, great forum!

I have a 1980 Johnson 60hp 2cyl. I drained the lower end as part of pre-season maintenance this weekend and got the dreaded milkshake, a real creamy one. I replaced the oil because I wanted to test the powerhead, and when I filled it I started getting some weepage out of the little weep hole just below the water intake. I've read here that the weephole is there to vent unburned fuel and oil.

I went to pick up a water pump and a set of seals yesterday, and the fellow at the counter suggested I might have a bigger problem - corrosion inside the lower unit.

Is this common? If that's the case would my best manoeuvre be to toss that lower unit on the trash heap?

Any help appreciated.

Paul

Re: 1980 Johnson 60, milkshake from weephole

Well, I just pressure tested the l/u and the driveshaft seals are obviously at least one problem. And they are so bad I can't tell if there is another problem.

I had a frozen impeller and may have destroyed those seals while trying to remove it (pliers, penetrating oil, heat, hammer, chisel, cursing, swearing, etc...) so I may still have another problem, but...

Since I have to replace those seals anyway to test further I looked at my OEM manual. Do I understand correctly that I have to remove the prop bearing carrier, etc, then remove the driveshaft to change those seals?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul
