Going to replace the water pump in my 80 Johnson 7.5. Probably one of the newer motors I've worked on. I'm used to the shift linkage disconnect in the leg. Do I have to remove the powerhead or is there another way to get at the pump? I notice the pump has a metal replaceable liner; is the pump plastic body usually re-usable? If I have to remove the powerhead is there any other parts (like seals and gaskets) I will need to replace besides the powerhead mounting gasket. All of my manuals are for the older motors so I'm not familiar with this one. Thanks for the help!

????-----There is no disconnect required on the shift shaft of this motor.----It slides out.------Just 3 bolts on the lower unit and it is off.

Yep, the shift rod is a slide fit on that model. The shaft has a flat on one side at the top.

Thanks for the replies! With it being that easy maybe it's time for me to move up into the 80's. What do you think of the plastic pump housing? Replace or re-use? thanks!

Depends. If it's cracked, worn, corroded, replace it. Look closely at the SST cup for ridges and wear.
