Please take a look at the link provided. it is my j35ecs. it is spitting back hard and dies at low idle. I have cleaned the carb, and all of that.
I adjusted the low speed idle to 1 1/2 turns from seat, and also cleaned the entire carb. I noticed water in the case, and tracked it down to a missing bolt in the back. I have replaced that today. I also found a wire going to one of the power packs corroded all to hell, and bought new wire to run it. I will do that tomorrow morning. I have the electric choke solenoid disconnected because the actuator will not slide in and out anymore. Dont know why, it just seems stuck. The solenoid works, just that the arm seems to get hung up 2/3 of the way through. There is no milkyness in plug holes, but plugs look dark. i replaced with new plugs and have same issue. Could it be the points? how do I adjust them? Is there supposed to be that much water spitting out of the exhaust holes ?
I tried pumpin the fuel bulb, and it changed nothing. On a side note. The barrel I have it is is black, and I noticed that there is a tremendous amount of black oil sludge in it now after just test running a small amount of times. I have a clear filter glass inline on the fuel hose, and it doenst look that rich.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like a "lean sneeze". Try turning the low speed needle out another 1/2 turn or so.
When you cleaned the carb did you remove the core plug on top of the carb and clean the passages in there?
How is the spark and compression?
Your engine doesn't points.

Thankyou for your input. I think you may have been on the money. I adjusted it 1 1/2 turns out because that is what the manual says to start with. I adjusted slowly but nothing. adjusted 2 turns and it stopped , but was still running rough. Then I replaced a wire in the harness that was eat up. runs like a champ now. Will install on boat and take out tomorrow. Awesome and thanks.

The manual just gives a starting point, usually have to fine tune.
Once you get it in the water and warmed up, recheck you settings.

Seems to run really well. Yep that exhaust water is a good amount too, the impellers going well.
Just two other small things.
Check that water isnt coming in and pooling anymore from a small leak anywhere during the water trial as when these short they often short into flames burning through the wiring harness and 2 when the motor cover slips on, it may push the bright yellow wire close to the flywheel, so that wire needs securing.
That wires gone on mine before too, the past owners had to rejoin it.

Ok everyone. I would first like to thank all of you that have helped me in the past and now. I absolutely love this forum.

I took out the j35ecs today. I could not be happier with it. Runs like a scolded dog for sure. I had a buddy with me in his boat and he had me going about 30. Thats smoking in a 14ft seanymph. I installed a stick steer in the front to balance out the weight . All works like a charm. The only problem is that when I got out there I couldnt get it to start. and wouldnt you know it I left all my tools and Volt meter in my truck. It would not even try to turn over. I ended up using a broken flathead and borrowed one from a passing boater. I jumped the starter solenoid out and it fired right up. I had no problems with this until I got on the lake. Any suggestions? Do they just go bad? Where is the best place to buy parts? I also have the electric choke on this model, but had to take it off because after I cleaned the carbs I installed it back on and it would slide all the way back into the actual solenoid. The solenoid still powers, and pulls the arm, but the arm gets stuck about 2/3 of the way in, and will not move. I took it off and just use manual. Any suggestions on that? Thanks again...Chris
Here is a video of todays outing, it is a little choppy, but it shows the speed.<<< http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy-kUxer8CQ >>

Yes, a solenoid can just go out, use your volt meter and check voltages, make sure the ground circut is working properly.
When you installed the choke solenoid did you adjust the solenoid body, is the spring under the choke plunger?

Yes I did adjust the seat. I have power to it, and it pulls the arm in. It just gets stuck. It is crazy. The spring is in there. It will move all the way to the spring and even depress it a little. . Once you are near spring it will just stop. Like something is lodged.in it . Just weird

Re: 1980 Johnson spits back hard then dies !

I just wanted to give an update to the 35hp johnson just in case anyone was following and wanted to know how it pushes the boat. Also how the stick steer I installed works.

The motor is a beast. I can run with 2 people around 30mph. Thats fast in a jon boat. I actually had replace almost all wiring . It was rotted real bad. I havent needed the electric choke that I took off at all. It starts first time every time. idles nicely. I absolutely love this motor.

The stick steer is awesome. I had to do a little modification , but for the most part it is stock. It truly adds more space, and a cool feel to a small boat. I love being up front. It makes the ride so much fun. I bought the stick steer from a marine mechanic shop for 40 dollars. He didnt have the stick and the system was seized up. He said he tried to work on it. I figured it would be cheaper to buy a replacement cable than to buy new system. I got it home and sprayed PB Blaster on it. Worked it for about 2 weeks everyday with a little more blaster . After a week it worked awesome. Saved me a ton of money.

I will post more pics on here as soon as I take time to take them. I have a lot of work to do still, but I am getting there!
