I am in the process of diagnosing a rough idle / hard start condition with my 1980 25hp Merc. I have noticed that I am getting a weak spark on one of my plug wires. The ohms seems to be OK coming off the coil, however. So, I pulled the plug wire from the coil and the metal connector appeared to be quite corroded out and brittle. I presume this would have an effect on the strength / quality of the spark going to the plug, as I believe these to be original coils / plug wires.
So, I am going to start by changing out the plug wires - simple and inexpensive.....My questions is - how exactly does the plug wire attach to the coil itself? I realize the boot holds the wire / connector assembly onto the coil, but where / how does the metal connector make contact with the metal connection inside the coil secondary? There just doesn't seem to be any sort of connection point at the end of the plug connection.
