1980 merc 40hp powerhead removal

ive got all 6 nuts removed that secure powerhead to exhaust housing. ive got starter, carb, all ignition and misc parts off. ive got fuel lines and water lines removed.<br /><br />what did i miss?<br />do i just PULL reall hard?<br />how do i get it off?<br />i have no lifting device other than my hands and i am working alone.<br /><br />any ideas from the guru's?

The base gasket hangs on for dear life. You'll about have to chisel it off once it separates. If the gearcase isn't off, do that. That will allow you to push sideways on the powerhead to break the gasket. Just don't let it tumble off. :eek:

Mike,you've missed 2 nuts.did you get the 2 right up the front?my book says 8 nuts on a 40.

there were 6 main studs/nuts , and 2 in the very , very front of motor, i wasnt sure if they were part of it or not so i undid them anyways just in case, although they dont look like they are fro the powerhead, but hey who know.<br /><br />i spose tomorrow ill take off the lower unit. i know that parts not seized cause i just had it off last week and all went well. thanks guys

Definitely 8 nuts Mike.2 at the very front,2 on really long studs(near the crankcase half sealing surface),2 between the long studs and the back and 2 at the back.

You'll be able to lift it yourself once you get all the nuts loose... I did it on my 50hp with not problem... Just give it a jar side to side to break the gasket loose...<br /><br />Make sure the drive shaft carrier doesn't come off with the powerhead. I had mine come off the shaft with the powerhead and drop down into the driveshaft housing to the lower unit.

got it. i removed the lower unit and the ground strap( of course), and now its off and on my garage floor
