Should the upper part of the leg be hot to the touch?? I recently replaced the water pump and it is pumping real strong, and the engine itself is only warm to touch on the head, but the upper leg is very warm, however I can keep my hand on it. Is this ok??

The upper part of the leg will naturally be hotter, as this is where the exhaust exits.

Are you running t-stats in the thing? It should be hotter than mildy warm at the head. You should only be able to touch it for 2 or 3 secs. before pulling away.

Thanks for the response. Yes it has a t-stat in it; at least I paid a local mechanic to install one!!! The head is hot to touch but I can keep my hand on it for quite several seconds. The motor runs great and pees very strong from the telltale.

Hi Biloxiriver, I have an 1980 35HP Evinrude that does exactly what your does, top of leg gets very warm to hot to touch. Also the water that exits through the exhaust relief outlets is very warm to hot, to see the amount of steam that comes out you would swear it is in meltdown mode. But, importantly, the powerhead is running at right temp, this has been proven with both feeling with fingers and thermomelt sticks and my mechanic says this is a characteristic of this particular design of OMC motor. However, as always, a quick visual of the impeller and a new thermostat is always good insurance.

Cheers from the Land Downunder
