i was just wondering if my motor i bought needs a thermostat to idle correctly. it idles a little rough and constantly shoots water out the ports under the powerhead from start up. i was told it needs a thermostat to idle correct ? any thoughts on it ?

Yes, the thermostat is needed both to get correct temp on the engine and even to keep some pressure in the water circuit to avoid an air-pocket on top.

avoid an air-pocket on top.

Installing a telltale will eliminate air pockets and give you a visual stream of water to confirm that the impeller is pumping water.

The motor should already have one but the location of the outlet on the lower part of the exhaust plate is not the best.....good idea to change it if possible which is what i think you are suggesting.....the location of the thermostat is much the same (low) but i would put more faith in it actually having one installed and creating a restriction (pressure) in the cooling system to eliminate air pockets than this particular telltale design.....there are no deflectors in these blocks.

The 'tell tale' main function, on those with the outlet at the exhaust cover, is not as a water indicator, but keep the exhaust cover cooled down by water circulation. If no 'tell tale' and thermostat closed, no water circulating and cooling.
