Just bought my first boat, 20' mako with 200hp Evinrude. Took it out this past weekend for the first time. The engine idles great and starts every time. It didn't seem to be over heating going through no wake zones but, once we opened it up a few hundred feet it looked like steam started to come out. The water coming out of the holes was hot. The engine never stalled out, I shut it off and it cranked right back up. Could this be a water pump issue or do you think its more complicated then that? It does not have a temp gauge, so we are going to install the gauge and sending unit. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 1981 Evin 200hp

Welcome aboard!

Great rig. My best buddy has the same rig. Well, it had a 200 crossflow and he replaced it with a 60 degree 175. Too sweet!

Anyway, when someone buys a "new to me" motor there are a couple of things to do. First is replace the water pump kit. Then do the complete cooling system service including t-stats and deflectors. No big deal, very nice project. I'm sure this will take care of any cooling issue.

Then change the lower unit oil. You've already checked it for water before you bought it so we know the oil is not contaminated, we just dont know how old it is.

Personally I go thru the carbs. Just to avoid any lean conditions. Priced a powerhead rebuild lately?

And if it doesnt have one, I'd recommend a water pressure gauge. The temp gauge tells you what already happened, the pressure gauge tells you what is happening.

Good luck!
