Hi.....I'm the new guy. New here, and new to owning a boat. It's been a learning experience to say the least. Hello to everyone and I hope I can gain a lot of wisdom from you all. So here goes.....

Just bought a 86 Bass Tracker with a 1981 60hp Evinrude 2cyl 2-stroke for $2200. It started on day of purchase but wouldn't when I got it home 2 hours later. So after replacing the engine wire harness and also having to buy a new actuator for the CMC power tilt/trim, I finally got it out on the water. This last weekend after launching it, it wouldn't start. It tried, sputtered a little, but would die. I took the cover off and I could stretch my arms just far enough to work the throttle linkage with left hand and ignition with right. I would turn the key, and as soon as it fired, I would let off the key and try to throttle it up. I noticed that after letting off the key, the starter bendix would disengage, but then it would jump back up and hit the flywheel. I felt a little piece of the bendix hit me in the face. I can see it's been doing that for a while because the bendix teeth are chewed up pretty bad. Is the ignition switch causing that or the solenoid? Or is it something in the starter?

After I finally got it started, I put the cover back on and started tooling across the water. It seemed like something was causing the motor to jerk sporadically. But it would eventually stop. I thought maybe a coil pack was skipping a beat but like I said, it eventually smoothed out. So it made me wonder if under a load from the water resistance, maybe the starter bendix was again jumping up and hitting the flywheel making the boat jerk like it was. It's a very noticeable jerk too. Kinda like when you are being towed, and a little slack forms in the strap but then is suddenly taken out.

Any help on these issues would be immensely appreciated.

Thanks for the opportunity to post my issues on here.

My advise is always simple and to the point.-----Post the compression test values here.----And drain the gear oil , look for water in the gearcase.

Welcome to iboats

It is amazing how many used motors start fine for the Seller, but not for the Buyer, once he gets it home... You have a few electrical issues that need to be fixed. Starter don't normally try to reengage the Flywheel once the engine start and the Key released. The Drive(bendix) should have a Spring that pushes the Drive down.
It could be that vibrations are revealing Shorts in the Key, the Wiring, Solenoid. Some troubleshooting is needed.
You should have to be trying to manipulate the Spark Timing and Carb opening by hand, as they are Synced to move in a certain Pattern. Open the Carb before all the Timing Advance is in, is not going to make for an Easier Starting Motor.

The jerk, you feel when running, could be Electrical, Fuel or a Mechanical Issue in the Gearcase. Troubleshooting will be required to flush out the first couple of Items. There several YouTube Videos that show how a Slipping/Worn Clutch Dog Jumping appears.
