Just picked up a 16' Blue Fin tinny w/ a great running 1981 Evinrude 75hp w/ power trim and tilt(3-wire version). Seller says that trim/tilt switch broke. Currently have a pigtail with the 3 wires...black, green, and another color(im not home so can't confirm the colors)....hanging out from under the helm of the boat.
Can I hook it up to some simple 3-way switch to check to see if power trim works? I'm terrible with electrical stuff, so I don't want to try to mess with it til someone here with electrical skill can advise me what to(or not to) do.

On a side note: Anyone know what years/hp this tilt/trim will fit? I already have a CMC on my Starcraft...so I may end up selling the power trim unit.

The power trim system changed midyear 1981. Up into the 81 model year, the trim unit between the transom brackets was a 3-wire system, and used a single solenoid inside the power trim control box. Mid year 1981, they changed to a 2- wire system with two relays inside the power trim control box. You have the older system which debuted in 1977 on the 140 V4 and all V6 engines. It's a solid system.
