1981 Bayliner 1950 with Mercruiser 470 2 barrel, still using points not HEI. The boat is new to me, I/O's are new to me, always had outboards in the past.

Engine was running rough and dieing when going from speed to neutral. Adjusted carbs and seemed to work pretty well. Tonight it suddenly will not engage fwd or reverse without stalling. Idles fine about 800-900 in neutral. As soon as I try to engage it dies.

For what it's worth to prop will spin freely by hand. I didn't hear any wierd sounds like bearings. I did a search and saw someone had something similar and someone mentioned a micro switch in throttle plate. Is this in the shift controls or in the engine area? The throttle mechanism seems pretty roughly used. Sloppy and quite a bit of play. Held together with tape. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

From my searches it sounds like the shift interupter micro switch may need adjusting. Where is this switch located? I found how to adjust it if I knew where it was. Feeling kind of dumb tonight.

Any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Is the shift interrupter switch in the same area as the lower shift cable?

I found some instruction for adjusting and replacing the shift cable. It would be nice if I could adjust it enough to get by this weekend before replacing it next week. I have ordered the shop manual, waiting for it to come in.

Again thanks for your help.

The Shift interrupter Isn't going to fix Anything,
But, Yes, It's located where the Lower Shift Cable attaches to the upper cable.......
