1981 mercury 80 hp

I have a 1981 mercury 80 hp 4 cylinder i just baught. The guy i baught it from told me he has been mixing the fuel 40:1 since he has owned it. My question is i see alot of you saying 50:1 on here will running it 40:1 hurt my engine or should i switch to 50:1?

That motor is made to run on a 50::1 mixture. Why run another ratio?

Thanks Chris, I'm new to boating and just wanted to make sure i knew the proper mixture before i take the boat out. Do you think he may have done any damage to the engine running it at 40:1?
