Still having trouble with the old girl. Boat seems to work fine running in neutral but has trouble getting up on plane with more than two people in it. The revs have a hard time getting past 3000rpm what should it run at? By myself in the boat I can hit 42 miles an hour and rev aboat 3700rpm any suggestions?

jon
you need to give some info about you may have tryed from you posts earlyer this year

42 is a fast speed for a 1982 140

if your hitting 42 mph i dont think you tack is correct a 140 does not make enough HP to run a boat at 42 mph at 3700 rpm

to give you something to compare to

the boat runs correctly and has no problems

i have a maxium 2000SC with a 3.0 merc its a modern deep vee with a 14x19 prop i hit 42 to 43 mph at 4800 rpm by my self

if i put 3 friends on the boat unless somebody stands up and moves forward it will not come up on plane for a really long time

if a put a 15x17 prop on the boat with 4 even 6 people near its max safe load it will get on plane very fast and perform great but i can only run about 34 mph and cruise at about 24 mph at 3700 rpm

IMHP running above 3800 rpm for long periods will lead to a pretty short motor life

tommays

My Johnson outboard had this identical problem. Turns out I replaced the prop with a higher pitch speed prop. This worked great when I was alone, but with others in the boat did not work. Acted like a vehicle taking off in high gear.
