That's normal to some degree due to compression of course, but I'm guessing from your statement it may be abnormally hard to pull.

Was it always like that?

So, what's the problem?
Does the engine start, but just hard to pull? Or does it not start at all?

I wouldn't know, but do those particular models have unusually high compression ratios maybe?

I don't think it's ceased since it's easy to pull when the plugs are out.

Let's see what the experts say...

Wrong plugs? Recoil timed correctly? Have you done a compression test?

How did it start for you last year ?-----And agreed , you may have to investigate timing the recoil starter.------The sheave has an oval groove to make operation of recoil easier.-----Is motor on a boat or a flimsy stand ?

Right plugs. the little arrow on the recoil is inside the gap that in need to be in but not in the middle. How do you adjust it? Has electric start too but has trouble cranking also with plugs in take them out and its cranks over fast and easy

Thanks

If starter won't crank it over then charge battery.----Load test battery.----Inspect cables.----Inspect starter motor armature and brushes.----If all that checks out there are issues with bearings on motor I say.
