I am new to boating. I inherited a family boat that has not been used for at least six years. I changed lower gear oil, and spark plugs and new gas with 50:1 ratio and new batteries.

I got it in the water and cranked it a few times and then it started. It ran okay most of the day however if did seem to bog down at times. WOT rpm max about 3800. My gauge read it never got over 20mph. (I was hoping for better performance it is proped with a 11-3/4 X 17) We stopped to fish and swim for about an hour and it never restarted and paddled back no fun. I am looking to make sure above all else when i turn the key on, it starts any ideas.
I cam home and got it to start again. Then it would not start again and finally got it to start one last time.
I am currently treating with SEA FOAM to help!

I would love to get the most out of what I already have.
What should the RPM be at WOT and what is the max MPH?
Tips on getting the most performance form the boat and engine.

Thank You for your help
any and all input welcomed.

i think it's to late to get the most out of it.if it sat for 6 years and the carbs were not cleaned.and it bogged down a few times and now it wont start at all.time to invest in a cylinder compression gauge.100psi to 120psi.

I'll concour with woody-and add while your buying tools get a spark tester too. I'd eliminate the possibilities of carb problems by rebuilding it and rebuild/replace the fule pump too. All are low cost/easy fixes that will allow you to focus on getting back fishing/tubeing:)

Check the FAQ for 'awakening the sleeping outboard' . You probably just have fouled carbs. Sea foam will help but not in the small passageways and jets.

I agree with the above, and would like to know what it is doing when not starting. Does it turn over and just won't fire up. After you get the Spark tester and compression tester get a service manual OEM if possible. Also your rpm should be higher and top end should be higher with a pitch that size. But you could have a water logged boat also. Sea Foam will not help in teh long run, it may run better but will eventually get something stuck in teh jet that the sea foam has lodged free. Best bet take carbs apart clean and get carb kit. There are steps on the forum for carb cleaning, I would start there. And recheck plugs, they maybe fouled even though they are newand you have new gas, the gas in the carb isn't new. Also refer to FAQ's and read the post about awakening sleeping outboards.

it does start it is just not consistent. I check the spark and its good. I don't have a gauge but the finger test it has pretty good compression ( ill get a gauge)

seems to start better with the plastic housing off the carbs ?

I still have prop questions it is aluminum so i don't think it can be water logged, right?

Re: 1982 60HP Evinrude 2nd run ran great now need to adj throttle control

Re: 1982 60HP Evinrude 2nd run ran great now need to adj throttle control

took out last weekend and after replacing all fuel lines and doing a sea foam soak and clean and removing carbs and soaking them
at WOT I was at about 5500 to 6Krpm running well. thank guys for the advise

oh yeah i upgraded from smaller fuel line tank to engine to 3/4 moeller fuel line

NOW im just trying to dial in the throttle control it seem like there is a lot of play when in forward I am looking for more control right now it goes zero to full throttle pegged. I have what i assume is a orig OMC remote control with separate idle lever for start and fast idle. please let me know what i can do to gain more finite control over the throttle.

Is there an easy adjustment?

thank you guys for the continued help!

You really, really should replace the pump impeller. It's at least 6 years old, probably older, and is made of rubber.

!

Replace the control cables. They stretch. Invest $30.00 and service that water pump. Unless you like paddling.
