Went to lake and never got boat off trailer, everytime I put in reverse it went dead. Now at home I have motor in a barrel and it won't idle unless fast idle lever is up atleast some. I can put muffs on it and it will idle just fine. Please help point me in direction of problem

Here's my first thought, just a suggestion, I am sure more of the pros will chime in on this. Are the exhaust bubbles coming out of the prop at idle? I have a feeling that the two holes on the top of the leg are plugged. Maybe those mud wasp buggers tried to build a nest there.

Forgot to mention in barrel it goes dead when put in gear and on muffs it'll run in gear. Why does it do right on muffs but not submerged in water?

Because the motor is doing no work on muffs. Muffs are a valid test for nothing. What is your compression? Does spark jump.a.7/16" gap?

The prop does no work running on a trailer in your driveway.----Even in gear in the driveway, it is still neutral !!

jaykno------A good idea.---Except the parts book does not show any " idle valves " that can be adjusted on this 1982 model 90 HP.

Compression is 125 on 3 of them and 130 on other. Carburetor is clean. 4 new spark plugs and got to testing ignition coils and found only 1 is working
