Removed the lower end to put in an impeller. The trans shift rod pulled out of lower unit. Any way to put it back in without rebuilding the lower end?

Re: 1982 dt 85 trans shift

I don't want to be a buzz kill and I haven't any experience with my gearcase (DT85) yet but I do recall my mechanic saying to be careful not to pull the shift rod up too hard or I'd have to go into the gearcase to get it back in. Hopefully someone else with more experience knows a trick to get it back in and will get back to you. Keep bumping this post up to the top until you hear from someone with more definitive info. If you give me your email I can send you a pdf file with the exploded drawings of the clutch for your engine and maybe you can get a better idea of the problem.
