I am buying a 1984 Evinrude 70 on Friday. I know Evinrude had a 75 hp in the 60's and Johnson made a 75 hp in the 80's. I did know that Evinrude had a 75 hp in the 80's. Here's picture on my new arrival. I have tons of info on the 70.

Your engine should be the small displacement version, at 49 cubic inches. Somewhere, perhaps around 1989, they increased the cubes to 56. I had a 1976 75, with the 15" mid and the 50 hp small case with different gears. Ran it for 6-7 years. Bulletproof. Great engine, but suffered from poor hole shot. My guess is that the 75 is ported higher than the 70. Makes it's h.p. at higher rpms than the 70 and has a slightly higher rev operating range. That's why the blocks are different p/n's. Also means the 75 has poor low end torque. Still, I'd probably change engines to get the trim, a really nice performance feature. Then experiment with props, or swap props when you want to ski. The carbs should not be an issue. They 75 carbs do flow more fuel, as they have larger jets.

thanks for the replys. how much faster will my boat go if trimmed properly because now it goes 35mph and seems to be plowing somewhat.

plowing is improper adjustment of the tilt pin. you are not going to notice a significant increase, other than when trimmed properly. 5 hp ain't much. move the tilt pin out you may save some money and not need a new motor.

I have a 1980 75hp on one of my boats and it has been a fantastic engine. I bought it in 1994, rebuilt it at that time (PO had neglected the waterpump and cooked it) and I have well over 1000 hours on it since. Outside of replacing a powerpack several years ago, I haven't done anything else other than basic seasonal maintenance.

As was noted, the only difference between the 70 and 75 is the porting in the block. The 75 peaks higher in the HP curve, so it might be a little sluggish coming out of the hole. It only shows up in mine if I have several adults in the boat and I'm trying to get it over the hump. Otherwise, it is absolutely a non-issue. Great on gas, too!

You should see a speed increase with trim. How much will depend on the boat weight, hull design and prop. Less difference with an alum prop with little cup. The stainless props have better cup which will raise the bow more at high speed. (less boat in the water=more speed.)

I run 36 MPH with my 70hp on a 17 foot ozark at about 1500 pounds.
The prop is an 18 pitch double cupped custom prop.

With a 75 you might see 2 more hp over you current 70 hp motor if it was setup correctly.
