I think there is a problem with my starter but am having trouble diagnosing it. When I turn the key, it spins but gets stuck when trying to move upward. Does anyone know why it would not engage with the flywheel? Should I just buy a new starter?

You can perform a simple test. Try to start the engine by attaching a set of automotive jumper cables direct to the starter, connected to a battery that you know has a good charge. If the starter cranks the engine normal rpm's (at least 250 rpm on the tach)-the starter is ok. You can put some light oil on the bendix (-not grease) and move it by hand through it's normal movement range.

If the starter cranks with the above test, then have the battery load tested and check all your battery cable connections for being clean and tight.
