Greetings from Portugal! need help on the restoration of my old GRP boat...it used to be a good fishing boat (5,80 meters long) but got rotted all on inside and thanks to this forum i found good advices to make it stronger. used to have a volvo 140 hp inboard ant sterndrive...

i´ve started grinding the inside hull and toke out all the rotten wood..planning on make the stringers and bulkheads from 2,5 mm honeycomb (nidacore) glass with epoxy and make the new transom from 4 layers off 10mm marine plywood glued and saturated with epoxy..

is it ok to use the Nidacore (glassed on both sides with 2 layers 1708 type fiberglass) as stringers and bulkheads? or should i use plywood?..

welcome aboard

you have come to the right place.

epoxy and nida core would be great, however about 6 x what you need to spend on a restoration of a polyurethane resin and glass boat. I would do poly resin, glass and exterior grade plywood

i suggest you look at these links. specifically look at link 14, then 2, 3 and 4

https://forums.iboats.com/forum/boa...r/295740-how-to-s-and-other-great-information

properly done, exterior grade plywood will last more than another 40 years and as stated prior, the materials will be significantly less expensive.

check to see if the boat is cloth or chopper glass. some early one-off and hand made boats were chopper glass which had to be made really thick and heavy. my suggestion, if it is a chopper glass boat, use the hull as a mold and make a new cloth/resin boat. less work.

I'd use Plywood all the way. As stated if you do the glassing right, it'll be there for your Grandkids. You'll need to use some 17oz Glass Fabric on the transom and Stringers too! The 2nd link below has some good info for you.
