Hi Guys,

Firstly, please pardon my ignorance here, but I'm feeling my way into this!

I want to remove the exhaust side of the block to check out the internals and check for corrosion.

Before writing here I tried on the Tinterweb to see how to remove the lower engine cover, but kept being directed to how to remove/drop the lower leg/gearbox etc, when all I want is to remove (or tip?) the lower engine cover to get access to the lower exhaust studs/bolts.

Can this even be done in situ, or does the powerhead have to come off? Or the leg dropped? Surely not?!

Manual ordered and should arrive any day now.

In the meanwhile any and all help greatly appreciated!

G'day

I have a 1977 Evinrude 70 hp 3 cyl. I did the same procedure. The bottom two or three bolts on the exhaust manifold are blocked by the cowl. I drilled a 3/4" hole adjacent to each affected bolt to get at them with a 1/4" drive socket and extension. I'll plug the holes with rubber plugs once I'm done. Go easy loosening the bolts. They are small and prone to snapping especially if there is corrosion, I got lucky and got all out without problem.

Good Luck

Cheers Tony - much obliged! Astonished you got them all out - gives me confidence. Already made up my mind to take baby steps getting them out - 18 of them from memory!

G'day
