First off, thanks for help in directing me to proper engine manual for 1982 mercruiser 140. A lot of work ahead of me in that department. Cylinder walls were pitted from rust and the previous owner letting it sit for 8 years. Block is at machine shop getting bored over at the moment so on to the gimble housing, bellows, and sterndrive lower unit rebuild until I get the block back from the shop.
Secondly, my inquiry is finding out which service manual to buy for the sterndrive. I have lower removed already and boy oh boy is it shot. I believe I have it dialed down to being a 1982 mc-1. The vertical driveshaft has a 1/4 pin about 5/8 inches long. From what I've read that usually can help to decide whether it's the mc-1,mc-1/F,or the alpha. Correct me if I'm wrong please. Also, it has tell lifting eye on top of the lower unit where the u joint is. I also read that the mc-1/mc-1/R/and alpha can all be installed with this upper gearcase. So can anyone tell or direct me as to what manual I would need for this sterndrive. The plate that says serial number sticker has no numbers after it, I'm guessing they faded in the sun. The lower unit is fairly simple to disassemble and rebuild from what I've done so far. I just want a service manual and schematic so I can ensure all parts get reinstalled and done properly. It seems someine previous made a botched attempt at a lower unit rebuild and I want to make sure I get everything replaced correctly. They used silicone on darn near every gasket. Most every Oring, oil seal, and gasket was dry rotted or shot. The previous owner said he overheated the engone and shut it down, towed it back and pulled the water pump on the engine block and said that wasn't the problem. I asked if he checked the impeller and water pump in the lower unit and he gave me a puzzled look and said he that it was the other water pump while pointed at the hydraulic pump near the engine block. I didn't bother asking any more questions and when I dropped the lower to check water pump he fried that thing good. The housing was melted the impeller had no fins at all and as stated every seal and gasket took a crap. Sorry for the novel and any help would be much appreciated. I have pictures if that would help any in i.d. purposes.

let me save you lots of time and money.

buy a junk mid 90's bayliner with a rotten hull and grab the entire 3.0 / Alpha 1 G2 for about $500 and drop the whole thing in your boat.

to rebuild your 3 liter and your drive will be well over $2k

Lol I appreciate the tip but thus was a free boat with the 3.0 but not the alpha 1 gen 2 sterndrive. My dad is paying for the parts I'm just doing the work for him. He's determined to get this completely rebuilt overhauled. He had a stroke and enjoys watching me and my younger brother work on engines like he used to. He likes the challenge. I suggested the same idea but he is stubbornly going forth with a complete overhaul/rebuild lol. I don't mind the work either. Boat motors are my after work hobby and although it's an expensive hobby there is nothing more satisfying than bringing an engine back to life after someone said it's junk and they want it gone.

The engine is already to be reassembled all new parts ordered that needed to be replaced. Just waiting on the block from the machine shop. The lower unit isn't too bad. Just needs a gasket, seal ,orings ,bushings , water pump, etc. overhaul kit.

As far as a manual for the sterndrive. Do you know which manual # for the sterndrive. As mentioned in original post it has the eye hook on the top plate and the vertical drives haft has the 1/4" pinch in the center. From what I've read this indicates an mc-1 correct?
