1982 pre alpha 260

During my service on my pre alpha 260 1982, I was under the impression that I could fit a touch over 2qts of mercruiser sae 90. Instead, a touch over 1 qt and it was spewing out of the full plug hole. Am I missing something here?

Ayuh,... Only that they only hold just a touch over a quart...
