1982 Volvo Penta 4.3 GL swapped out with 1991 Mercruiser 5.0 thunderbolt

I am swapping a '82 Volvo Penta 4.3 gl motor for a Mercruiser 5.0 motor. both motors are 305 c.i.d. bell housing went right on and motor went into boat, all is well , except wiring harness plug VP has 7 pins and merc has 9. what am I missing?

Hi. Not sure I understand a couple of things here.
I’d be very sure there wasn’t a 1982 4.3 gl. They didn’t come along until many years later.
Also, a 4.3 isn’t a 305ci. The 5.0 will be though.

Not getting into the motor type, they swapped so both the same

The connectors are both 10 pin type, its just the old one only had 7 pins being used. The pins not used or were removed are

3 Tan - Water Temp Gauge
10 Brown/White - Trim Gauge

ok. my bad.. the boat is a 1982 Renken and i thought it was original motor but maybe not . tag on motor says Prod No. 3868045 Type 4.3 GL PMDA SER. NO. 4110110636 with a reverse gear drive unit SX-CT1 1.97
i wanted to use this mercruiser motor (see pic). but maybe that is bad idea and should find another VP 4.3

That makes more sense now. I’d think there won’t be too much difference in power perhaps. The 4.3 gl will likely be about 205hp or so. The 5.0 merc there will be about 220-230 or so. The ratio is a bit low for a v8 perhaps.

Ayuh,...... Now it depends on what pitch prop they're swingin' now,.....
If a 17",..?? No problem,.....
If a 23",..?? yer gonna need a taller gear ratio,.....
