Hi!
I changed spark plugs and wires 4 months ago, but today when I was cleaning them I found that one of the plugs still new. Means not fire on that cylinder..? I disconect the coil and took it to a marine place where they told me that was working fine. My rpm only reaching up to 2500, normally goes up to 4000rpm. Last time that I used was fine... (2 months ago) Also, I will like to ask why I can't start the boat on neutral. I had to put the trotle on forward and hold the key down. It will start and run, but is a pain...I will like to fix this problem too! Any suggestions will be appreciated....RiverMan
(Boat=19' Bayliner trophy)

Hi billc
It sounds like you have a dead cylinder.
You have to check the engine for spark as a unit. The coil may be good, but other components are just as critical. Check for spark at all cylinders.
If you have spark to all cylinders, you may have a fuel issue. Does it run better with the key pushed in? If so, you may have a fuel problem, carb, pump, etc.

Don't rule out compression either....

YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR IGNITION SYSTEM OUTPUT TESTED IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SPARK ON THAT CYLINDER TO DETERMINE WEATHER IT IS A CDI OR TRIGGER FAULT IT WOULD PAY TO TAKE YOUR BOAT TO A SHOP TO HAVE THIS DONE BUT MAKE SURE YOU RESEARCH 1ST BECAUSE YOU MAY FIND IT EXPENSIVE IF THEY SPECIALISE IN PART CHANGING REPAIRS
A GOOD SHOP WILL USE A PEAK VOLTAGE METER TO DETERMINE THE STATE OF YOUR IGNITION SYSTEM
GOOD LUCK!

ME AGAIN I JUST NOTICED YOU SAY YOU USUALLY GET 4000RPM YOU SHOULD BE GETTING ABOVE 5000RPM ON THIS ENGINE.
YOU MAY NEED TO LOOK AT DROPPING A PROP SIZE TO PICK UP YOUR RPM ,LOW RPM MEANS YOUR ENGINE IS HAVING TO WORK TO HARD,THIS MAY IN TIME LEAD TO ENGINE FAILURE.
IM PROBABLY FREAKIN YOU OUT NOW,BUT DON,T WORRY TALK TO A BOAT MECHANIC,PREFERABLY A JOHNSON DEALER.

If you take it to a shop try Gary at outboard repair on Pondella Road, 941-997-9880.

Re: 1983 115 Johnson V4

Well, today I checked for compression on all cylinders: 120,125(2) and 130. However, I readjusted plug wires and clean carb. After all, boat start fine and I throttle on low speed for 1 hour(because of the speed regulations/manatees),until I got to the main river and increase throttle to maximun speed and RPM only up 3200 and not much speed. I spent aprox. 3 hours on water. The boat never quit, but still not speed. Some of my friends think that maybe is the powerpack going bad. I thinking of taking the powerpack to a marine place and ask them to check it. I am trying to save some dollars. Thanks for the info on Gary on Pondella rd ...NFM...I personally know him... and thanks to everyone for your comments.
