1983 150hp johnson won't start

v6 with 3 topfeed carbs-have removed and cleaned carbs-have fire to all 6 plugs-will not even start with starter fluid directly into carbs-backfires a little like maybe timing prob but motor has not been torn down since it was running-can outboards jump time<br />tks reb1277

The only way I know that timing could be off without someone changing it would be the woodruff key that aligns the crank with the flywheel shearing. Have only seen that happen once and that was the result of a flywheel being removed for maintenance and the taper shaft not being clean upon reassenbly. Has the flywheel been removed lately? I am by far not an expert however. Have you checked the timing? A cheap timing light can be had for less than $35.00.

thanks GC i have a correction to make-motor is evinrude instead of johnson but i don't think that would make any diff-flywheel has not been off- will get timing light
